The old mole is the main spot in the old harbour. Sailing ships all over the world use this bay for for a save rest on their trip across the Atlantic. There is no Marina in Mindelo. On the left side is the wreck of the old watership, which brought the drinking water from St. Antao.

Beside the old mole is the beach of Mindelo. Especially on weekend its full of people. The people from the sailing boats also debark here with their dinghy when they go to the market or to the center.

From Mindelo it is just a short way (by taxi) to the top of Monte Verde (750m), the highest point of Sao Vicente. The peak of the mountain is always covered by clouds, leaving enough water to use the higher parts for agriculture.

Alugers are the only means of transportation on this island. They are some kind of pick-up taxis. There are no busses, but some Alugers have regular timetables. The streets are narrow and they drive very fast. Escpecially on the way back to Porto Nuevo, where they want to get a place in the queue for the new ferry guests.

Mosteiros is the second largest village in the northern part of the Fogo. You can walk down from the caldeira or Pico to this village in one day. Regular Alugers to Sao Filipe are once a day.

In the middle of the island is a big old caldeira called Cha das Caldeiras in about 1600m. The caldeira has a diameter from about 8km. Inside this caldeira is the Pico de Fogo.

Inside the Cha das Caldeiras (1600m) is the Pico de Fogo (2829m). It is hard to get up, because there is no real way up in black sand. The photo shows the side of Pico, where the path to the top is leading up.

Inside the Cha das Caldeiras the people try to make white and red wines. You can taste it at this place, it tastes interesting (means not like usual wines) and is very rare. Non-wine drinkers should drink spanish beer.
